Today I'm going to give you 18 Things To Knowabout the new GoPro Hero 8
Black. I'mgonna go into a little bit of the detailand stuff, kind of the under
the covers ofhow things actually work on thesecameras and I'm gonna talk about
thegood, and the bad of these camera. Theyare definitely not perfect and
there'ssome things that I love, and some thingsthat drive me absolutely
bonkers. Alsonote that I have a ton of sample footagein this video but I also
have adedicated footage video up there in thecorner. That's like the
extravaganza of samplefootage. Comparisons of four differentcameras at once,
all sorts of cool stuffthere. So check that out as well as the in-depth review
that you see on thescreen right now. With that let's getinto a bit of a freebie
that is notincluded on my 18 Things, which is thepricing on this. The Hero 8
Black is at$399, the Hero 7 Black moves down to $329, the Hero 7 Silver goes to
$199, and thenthey've introduced a new Hero Max at$499, which replaces the
older GoProFusion 360 camera. Still 360 degrees, andI'll talk about it at the
end of thisvideo. So with that let's get into #1 on the list, which is the new
frame. Orrather lack thereof: the new case design. So in the past you had to put
a framearound the camera in order to go aheadand mount it to a GoPro mount. Now
themount is built into the bottom. It's asmall metal mount that unfolds
outwardsso you can put it flat on the tablewithout the mount, which is pretty
awesome.Or you can just simply pop the mount outand then attach it to an
existing GoPro mount. It works with all existing GoPromounts, so if you already
have mounts outthere, that stuff works great no problem. But it won't
necessarily work with allcases. So if you had for example anunderwater case,
not so much there. If youhave one of the rubber silicon type cases, that does
actually fit around a camerayou just need to make a little hole forthe mount at
the bottom but that'llat least still kinda work. But if you're one ofthe five
people left still flying one ofthe GoPro Karma drones - that's notcompatible
with this. Neither is theKarma Grip gimbal that came out the sametime
frame. Uhhh...at least not without duct
tape. You could maybe kinda make itwork but it's honestly not worth it anymore. While
on the whole this designis definitely an improvement, there aresome downsides.
Number one is thatopening up this battery door is miserable.Especially in the
cold, in kindof a windy scenario - like up in themountains: That really sucked.
You need toput your fingernail down there, and it'seasy to kind of...it's not
good at all. Theother catches there is no smaller dooraccess to the USB charger
[port]. You have to have the entire door. You can take thisoff if you want to.
But then you have thebattery just chillin' there. It's notreally ideal, but
that probably gets tothe next one on the list which is thenew GoPro Mods. These
new 'mods', oraccessories as the rest of the worldcalls them basically extends
thefunctionality of the GoPro itself froman integrated electronic standpoint.
Nowthere are three mods, the first one is aMedia Mod. That most notably
includes ashotgun mic, so it's pointing directly atyou - ideal for vlogging, or
any sort ofholding it out, like holding it out type setup. It also has a 3.5
millimeteradapter in case you find that [included] shotgunmic sucks. And then
it has a USB-Cpass-through so an additional USB-C portthere, as well as having
a mini HDMIbecause this camera itself no longer hasmeaning HDMI on it the
second mod is aflip up screen so it's 2 inch screenthat flips up off the back
to allow youto see yourself again holding out infront of you again really
design kind offor that vlogging snare or anythingwhere you want to hold and
kind of walkand talk and then thirdly there's a new200 lumen light as well that
you can addto this whole entire kit now thedownside here is that none of these
modsare available today or anytime neartoday GoPros talking sometime later onthis
year so that's a hugedisappointment there and of course asyou may have realized
with these newmods GoPros actually taken out featuresfrom the hero 7 black that
are not inthe hero right black for example there'sno more mini HDMI port on the
side ofthis in addition if you want to chargethis on the go that kind of suckscompared
the way it was in the past withthat smaller door that made it reallyclean to
keep the battery locked tightbut you could still access that USBcharging port
so all in all I'm excitedby the mods I think they're really gonnabe cool once I
get my hands on them butI'm also disappointing the fans they'vetaken some of
those features away fromthe hero 8 next on the list is the newhyper smooth 2.0
now hyper smooth wasintroduced in the hero 7 lineup and itdramatically improved
the stability ofthe GoPro camera it was pretty much agame-changer for a GoPro
hyper supose2.0 is a modest upgrade to that it goesahead and extends hyper
smoothing toevery frame rate in every aspect rationow for certain groups of
people this isgonna be a pretty big deal for thosethat you're doing 4 by 3 and
thenreframing and post this is solid forthose that are shooting at 1080p 240frames
per second you can now leavehyper smooth on and then slow down thatfootage when
it gets the right point offootage as opposed to have to make adecision between
having really stablefootage in really smooth footage forthat one split second
that you wanted toslow down into slo-mo so that takes usright into the next
feature which is anew hyper smooth boost what this doesthat basically crops in
the picture justslightly and it goes ahead and offerslike even higher level
stability thisisn't offer in every mode but it isoffered in things like 4k 30
for exampleand you definitely notice the differenceit's much smoother compared
to justregular hyper smooth 2.0 or otherwisein boost mode GoPro says they'releveraging
more the accelerometers andthe gyros in the camera itself to kindof predict
what's gonna happen in thescene and then go ahead and smooth basedon that now
just a little tip heredouble check and always ensure that theblue icon is on if
it's blue you gotboost if there's no blue there's noboost now it's a good time
to mention ifyou are funny this video useful orinteresting or whatever go ahead
andjust watch that like button the bottomthere it really helps with the video
andthe channel quite a bit okay next on thelist are a few things that aredefinitely
making me as a video heatpretty darn happy number one on the listis ability to
do 4k linear which isawesome so now I can mix all my footagefrom normal camera
so you don't havethat kind of fisheye look at all thatused to be required for
the 4k mode sonow you can do straight linear and ontop of that there is now the
ability todo 100 megabit per second a bitrate youcan select that within the
protuneoptions and you'll notice the proteinoptions also a little bit cleaned
uphere as well now you go down and youjust see all the options you choose whatyou
want you don't feel like you'reenabling everything you just choose whatparticular
settings you want to switchand you're off and running next on thelist is
probably one my favoritefeatures which is the new live burstmode now the rest
of the world againcalls this live photo mode or at leastApple does anyways and
that allows youto take a picture but actually get theframes before and after it
so every timeyou take a picture in live burst mode itrecords 1.5 seconds before
and 1.5seconds afterwards it's actually takinga three second long video clip
and thenit goes ahead allows you to pull out theexact frame that you want it's
beensuper handy for me because I take mycamera a lot of times when I'm runningand
riding and stuff like that I justtake photos along the way for Strava andother
social media apps but this allowsme to get the exact right frame which isuseful
again when you're in actionscenarios next on the list still in thephoto realm
is the updated super photomode so one of the things I said theyworked a lot on
is reducing ghostingartifacts and ghosting happens when youtake a super photo
which is usually avery kind of HDR like photo and itmerges those photos
together but thereis these weird ghosting artifacts thatdon't quite line up and
you see trailsit just you know it when you see it sortof thing and GoPro says
they've done alot of work both at the processing sideas well as the algorithm
side to reduceor eliminate those I have yet to see aghosted image on the here
right blackthus far versus I've seen him a fairnumber of times on the hero 7
black overthe last year in addition they've alsoenabled ability to go ahead and
manuallytoggle on and off HDR as kind of asubset of that so in case you did ordidn't
want that you can now do thatnext on the list we're gonna slide backto the
video side of stuff and talkabout the updated time work goprointroduced time
warp in the hero 7 blackand what that allows you to do isessentially do a
hyperlapseso it's taking a time lapse and kickingup the next level where it's
stabilizedbut we thought you had to choose atoggle of exactly how fast to make
thathyperlapse and for a lot of peoplemyself included you weren't really surehow
long that one that to be so whatGoPros done is that new auto mode soinstead of
choosing an exact timing youjust choose auto and we'll figure outfor you which
has been pretty useful Ifound in my testing thus far it'sactually nailed kind
of what I wantedit's sped up and slowed down wereexpected so that's pretty good
stuff ifyou want the manual modes don't worryit's still there they didn't go
anywherenext we got the new digital lenses nowthis is probably more of like amarketing
term but you'll see itdifferent in the user interface so I'mcounting it as a
new feature heredigital lenses essentially gives amarketing term to what used
to be widesuper wide linear narrow etc so GoProhas kind of made this whole
digital lensconcept where they've moved stuff to theforefront it made it much
more clear asto which mode you are and made it mucheasier to switch between
those differentmodes next up the new capture presetsnow one of the things that
GoPro saidpeople generally struggle with the pastif they were new to GoPro is
figuringout which mode they should be in sothey've simplified that down now
whereyou these capture presets and by defaultthere's four of them out of the
box thatallows you kind of pick what you wantbased on what kind of activity
you'redoing but what's cool about this you canextend this now and create your
owncapture presets so in my case I cancreate one that is for 4k linear thatI'm
shooting when I want to mix in youknow DSLR cameras footage and then I canshoot
something for slo-mo and so on allthis though is more or less a take onwhat DJI
did with the Osmo action havingcamera presets there which in turn is ittake on
what Garmin did with the verbultra series back like two years ago sokind of
what's old is new again fromsomeone else and then someone elsebefore that up
next on the list is thenew 1080p streaming option last yearwhen GoPro
introduced live streaming forthe GoPro cameras they did it at 720pwhich was a
bit weird since the rest ofthe internet often streams at 1080p butthey did that
and now it's up to 1080phere which is awesome in addition tothat you can go ahead
and live streamdirectly to YouTube now just simplyselect that in the live
options there atthe bottom and you're good to gonext there's a new battery on
the heroright black but fear not it's stillcompatible with the hero five six
andseven batteries you'll notice thedifference right away that onehas blue
pants and the other one is theblack one for the past they both workinginterchangeably
in either camera so youcan use a hero 8 battery in hero 7camera or vice versathe
only difference is that GoPro sayson some hyper smooth 2.0 modes andparticular
with Boost it may not work aswell on the old batteries as a newbatteries also I
have tested third-partybatteries I tend to use myself a ton ofthird-party
batteries and all those seemto work just fine I haven't seen any ofthe issues
that the GoPro is talkingabout on either older batteries orthird-party
batteries with hyper smooth2.0 next on the list there is a new lensnow this
lens GoPro says there's twotimes stronger in the past I haven'ttaken out a
hammer and swung it harderto see if that'll pull true but they sayit's 2 times
stronger they did that viaincreasing the thickness of the glassitself so it's
up to 2 millimeters fromthe past it was 1.3 millimeters and withthat whole
thing they got rid of theability to remove the lens off the frontso that is
definitely a bit of a bummerespecially if you break it then you haveto go ahead
and get it back to GoProsupport to get swapped out now GoProdoes note though
that with their GoProPlus subscription package that allowsyou to get it
replaced on the flywithout any questions asked so that atleast is positive and
of course GoProPlus has like the uploading bit and 50%of accessories and other
things thatthat are already useful but that isdefinitely a bummer because in
the pastit was just like 20 or so bucks toreplace the lens versus now paying
fivebucks a month also I was concerned thatthere would be no way to put ND
filterson it but GoPros hasn't launched they'vepartnered with polar pro so
there willbe ND filters available for the killer 8black so that's not all bad
newsnext the hero 8 includes a new frontmicrophone now there are threemicrophones
on total on the hero 8there's one on the front on the side andon the bottom and
we saw a ton of audioimprovements in the hero 7 and with thehero 8 they said
this new frontmicrophone is better suited from a windstandpoint and then with
that theypaired a bunch of algorithm improvementsas well to go ahead and not
only dealwith the wind side of things better thanthey have in a hero 7 but also
to goahead and improve ambient noise inquieter environmentsstill talking to you
though and cruisingdown this little section right here nowdefinitely got a head
blow at this pointI'm still talking to you though okaywe're getting in the
homestretch herebut don't worry you got a few more coolthings to talk about
starting off withthe Auto leveling in the GoPro app so ifyou ever mounted your
camera justslightly off-center but didn't realizeit and then captured a bunch
of footageyou're like oh that's not ideal- GoPro app will just automaticallylevel
for you and I'm not gaystraightened out again so that's handybecause certainly
you could have usedthird-party apps in the past to do thatbut this is now in
the GoPro app itselfnext a brief note on battery life I'mgonna put all the
battery life estimatesright now on the screen from GoPro thoseare the official
specs in my testingit's pretty close to that in more orless similar to what I
saw on the hero 7block in the past overall no real shiftsthere either positive
or negative in myexperience next it's worth noting thatGoPro says they've
changed a little bitof the coloring on the camera betweenthe hero 7 and the
hero black and youcan see that in certain scenarios by andlarge it seems to
color better and moretrue though have seen like one maybe twoscenarios and last
month where it didn'tquite nail that overall though it'sdefinitely either equal
or better thanI've seen in the past the colors arejust popping on everything I
do forphotos to videos so I have no realcomplaints there finally let's talkbriefly
about the new GoPro Hero maxthat is again the fusion replacement ofthe past now
the first thing you'llnotice it's a heck of a lot smaller thanthe fusion camera
was so that's positivenumber twos I've gotten rid of therequirement to have two
SD cards in itwhich was a pain in the butt andpost-processing and all that kind
ofstuff they've also added a 1.7 inchscreen on the front of it which is superhandy
for framing and figuring outwhat's in frame router frame becausewhile it is a
360 degree camera yousometimes want to go ahead and use justa single chunk of
that frame as opposedto the entire thing further they'veadded a shotgun mic to
it as part oftheir six microphone array on the cameraso there's a ton of
microphones on thiscamera itself and then they've added1080p live streaming as
well sosomething that the older fusion didn'thave but I want to kind of caution
youthat this isn't a case of having twoGoPros for the price of one plus ahundred
bucks for example if you'regonna use a single front lens there it'sstill 1440p
you're not gonna be able todo 4k like you could on the hero a blackso just keep
that in mind it's adifferent type of camera which is agreat camera potentially
so stay tunedfor later on in October when it comesout and I'll go ahead and do
a kind of afull new things review on it then okayso there you go that is all
the newthings on the GoPro Hero 8 black youknow from my perspective if you'retrying
to slide between buying a hero 7and a hero 8 for the extra 70 bucks I'deasily
go hero 8 I don't think it'sprobably to be worth it for most peopleto upgrade
from the hero 7 to the hero 8and I think you know for me personally Ireally
love the new stabilization of thehero 8 but I'm also a bit bummed aboutsome of
the trade-offs they've madearound this especially around some ofthe accessories
stuff and finally if youfound this video interesting don'tforget hit subscribe
Derek's I got morevideos on the way of course includingeventually the GoPro
Hero Max when itcomes out and then down the road the newmods and plenty of
details on all thatgoodness as soon as they're out have agood one
